Datascape

Datascape

Datascape is a social geographic storytelling platform that enables artists, researchers, community groups and others to narrate their communities and physical spaces through a mobile vehicle-based laboratory. The van has stationary displays for visual media and a handheld display through which interactive virtual worlds are created and experienced as another layer of the physical world. By collecting and creating geographic data, photography, sounds/narration, and 3D environments, participants engage local geographies to explore and communicate topics of interest, which have included ozone distribution, crime, ecology, art, geology and history. Through the development and use of this platform, we are generating valuable insights into how technologies can mediate – and obfuscate – more traditional narrative practices.

Sonic Panoramas

Sonic panoramas

Sonic Panoramas is a visual and sonic journey through California landscapes. From expansive desert to sprawling suburbia, viewers are immersed in fully panoramic landscape imagery. Movement around the space navigates datasets which have been abstracted from the imagery, enacting the underlying data into various sound mappings. Pixels are highlighted as their information generates a dynamic soundscape. This is an initial exploration into the use of landscape as structures for navigable interactive music experiences. It also challenges the viewer to consider the relationship between the digital image and the digitization of landscape that has occurred through anthropogenic land use in southern California.

Unexceptional.net Network/Social Visualizer

Visualization of a multi-modal game. With wireless, GPS, online, and game engine the game has a complex backend and network system. This is a real-time, interactive graphic and sonic visualization of the network activity and game/player state information. It focuses on making visible the network activity and relationships between networked social actors.

SignalPlay

SignalPlay

Interaction with coded objects encourages exploration and discovery of gestural sound interfaces through the metaphor of play. Sensors form an ad-hoc network that detects gestural motion as well as environmental factors such as light and magnetic. Your interactions with the sensor network cause both immediate and systemic changes in the soundscape.
